Sized to your space and how you'll use it, from a short bar with a sink to a small kitchen for guests.

A bar sink tied into existing lines where possible, under a plumbing permit.Appliance space

The difference matters, because a full kitchen can turn your basement into a separate home in the eyes of the city.
For your own family
In Edmonton, interior changes don't need a development permit unless they add a dwelling. A wet bar or kitchenette you use yourself doesn't.
When it becomes a suite
A dwelling is a self-contained home with its own bedroom, bathroom, living area and kitchen. Add a separate entrance and your basement may be a secondary suite, with its own permits and code rules.
Plumbing still needs a permit
Installing a new sink means new plumbing, which needs a plumbing permit and an inspection before the walls close.
Local differences
St. Albert may ask for more information at the permit stage when kitchen facilities are installed. Your builder can check the rules where you live.

Do I need a permit for a basement wet bar?
The sink needs a plumbing permit and new circuits need an electrical permit. In Edmonton, a wet bar for your own use doesn't need a development permit. Your builder can take care of the permits.
Is a kitchenette the same as a legal suite kitchen?
No. A kitchenette for your family is part of your home. A kitchen in a separate unit with its own entrance can make it a secondary suite, which has extra zoning and code requirements.
Can I put a stove in my basement kitchenette?
Ask your builder at the estimate. Cooking appliances add electrical and ventilation needs, and a full kitchen can change how the city sees your basement.
Where's the best place for a wet bar?
Usually close to existing plumbing, which keeps the cost down. Your builder can look at your drain and water lines at the estimate.
